EXAMPLES OF VERBS IN THE ACTIVE VOICE:

If a verb is constructed in the active voice, the subject is the one who realizes the action:

  • Curiosity killed Madam Marry.
    • What is the subject here?: Curiosity
    • Who is the one to realize the action?:

In this example the verb is “to kill.” In this example we can say that “curiosity” was the one to do the killing, therefore we can say that the sentence is in active voice.

  • The old man tripped while walking.
    • What is the subject here?: ‘The old man
    • Who is the one to realize the action?:

In this sentence, the verb is “to trip.” We can say that “the old man” was the person who realized the action, therefore we can say that the sentence in active voice.
Nevertheless, sometimes it is not that easy to understand if the subject took the action or not. Take the example below:

  • The old man was seen tripping while he walked.
    • What is the subject here? ‘The old man
    • Who is the one to realize the action?:
In this sentence, the verb is “to see.” “The old man” is not the one to realize the action “to see.” Therefore, the form “was seen” is the passive voice in this sentence.

As we saw in the last example, “the old man” is not the subject that takes up the action in the sentence. The action was taken by an unknown subject who saw the old man tripping.
