Nevertheles, we can come across adjectives in other forms as well.

For example:

The toy which you bought last year has broken down.

The movie which your friend recomended scared the kids.

Tyler is a person who listens when you wish him to talk.

PARTS OF ADJECTIVE CLAUSES

“Adjective clauses”, “adjectivals,” or “relative clauses” have to have the three characteristics described below:

  1. Beginning with a relative pronoun (that, who, whom, which, whose) or a relative adverb (when, why, where). This way, the adjective can be connected to the noun which it describes. Nevertheless, the detail that must not be forgotten here is that relative pronouns may often be dismissed.
  2. Having a subject and a verb
  3. Describing the noun / giving information about the noun.

Try to observe these three characteristics in the example below:

Generally, relative pronouns are used in adjective clauses as pronouns. Analyze the sentence below:

As we have explained before, removing relative pronouns from the sentence is a common situation.

For example:

  • The toy you bought last year has broken down.(Instead of “The toy which…”)
  • The movie your friend recommended scared the kids.(Instead of “The movie which…”)

Nevertheless, removing the relative pronoun is not always possible. For example, we cannot remove the relative pronoun from the sentence below:

  • Tyler is a person who listens when you wish him to talk. (“Tyler is a person listens”)

USE OF THE COMMA

If the adjective clause is necessary for describing the noun, then, we cannot use a comma.

However, if the adjective clause is providing extra information about the noun it describes, then a comma should be used.
